Birdsville Races

Right from the very first race meeting back in 1882 Horse Racing in Birdsville has been well received.

After the success of the first meeting a jockey club was formed, Stewards appointed and committee elected – the rest as they say, is history.

The town was established in the 1880’s as a customs post on the SA/Qld border and at the head of the Birdsville Track Stock Route to southern markets but at Federation in 1901 tolls for cattle crossing the border were abolished and the population dwindled as a result.

The Birdsville Races however went from strength to strength.

The first course was moved to the present position after being regularly inundated with floodwaters but the cup distance has remained at 1 mile (1600 metres) since its first running in 1882, a point of difference being that the track is only one of four in Qld raced anti-clockwise.

The party starts in Thursday night with the Birdsville Races Cocktail Party – frock up and dance the night away with live music – just the thing to set the mood for the rest of the weekend….

The 13 race program with prize money in excess of $140,000.00 starts Friday and continues Saturday culminating with the XXXX Gold Birdsville Cup. Naturally, the all-important Fashions on the Field will be a highlight of the day and Oncourse Bookmakers; food and bar facilities are available throughout the event.

Racegoers will enjoy live entertainment both nights and apart from the live music be treated to one of Australia’s legendary shows with the Fred Brophy Boxing Troupe.

May be you might want to try your skills in the ring... A highlight of the weekend also occurs on Saturday night at Fred Brophy’s Boxing Tent –

The Giant Auction, where all manner of donated goods including collectables, memorabilia and vouchers – anything at all will go under the hammer to raise funds for RFDS. If you need a break from the racing, wander around the Market Stalls where you will find arts & crafts, clothes, leather goods, souvenirs and my favourite Riversands Wines wine tasting (their Black Magic Vintage Port is wicked) to name a few.

Tickets for the Birdsville Races Cocktail Party and Trackside Marquees together with Souvenir Medallion can be ordered online but must be collected along with general course entry tickets from the Birdsville Race Club shop located in the Visitor Information Centre on Billabong Boulevard during race week.

There is limited accommodation available in Birdsville during race week; camping sites are available at the Birdsville Caravan Park or overflow camping with limited facilities is available along the banks of the Diamantina River. The Birdsville Hotel is not available for accommodation during race week.

Rent-a-tent will provide tented accommodation at Tent City near the heart of the town and close to all of the action for visitors who do not want to bring bedding or erect their own tents. Packages vary but include hot showers, clean toilets and use of a basic camp kitchen facilities including power to recharge your electronic equipment. Click here for more information.
