Gemfest (Outback Festivals)
Approximately 45km west of Emerald in Central Queensland is the region known as The Gemfields which includes the towns of Anakie, Sapphire and Rubyvale.
It is in this region that gems, such as the stunning sapphire are mined and fossicked.
Made of Aluminium Oxide and coloured by elements such as iron, titanium, or chromium, a Sapphire is a unique and beautiful gemstone which is commonly worn decoratively as jewellery.
The Gemfest – Festival of Gems is held at the Allen King Memorial Park in Anakie, in August each year, and is a celebration of the area’s precious and semi-precious stones, including sapphires, diamonds, pearls, zircons and opals.
The festival offers something for everyone; with gem displays and exhibitions as well as music and live performances from musicians, acrobats and comedians.
There are around 200 traders selling gems, jewellery and equipment supplies for gem enthusiasts.
Don’t miss the "Jewels of the Outback" exhibition featuring rare and exceptional sapphires- many exclusive to Gemfest.
To top it all off, there is even a dedicated children’s entertainment area and a fireworks display on the Saturday night!
Take the opportunity to fossick for gems or try your luck in the Silent Auction.
Pick up a prize or two with competitions, daily lucky gate draws and the Gemfest Raffle!
Stay locally, with many accommodation options ranging from camping to motel’s and bed‘n’ breakfasts.
Come along and join in the family fun and festivities at the Gemfest – Festival of Gems! Whether it is knowledge, happiness or gems, everyone will go home a little richer!
