Birdsville Races (Horse Racing)
This famous outback town of Birdsville is the starting point for many people travelling into South Australia along the Birdsville Track - first developed in the 1880's as one of Australia's major stock routes.
Stories of stockmen who passed through Birdsville on this famous track are part of town legend.
Birdsville is best known for its famous Birdsville Pub and the annual outback horse race meeting - Birdsville Races and Birdsville Cup held on the first Saturday in September when the population grows from 100 odd to 6,000 in two days. The race track itself is on a claypan alongside the sand dunes just out of town and is one of four tracks in Queensland that run anti-clockwise.
Be part of the non-stop party at Australia's most famous outback race meeting, the Birdsville Races held August 31st to 1st September 2012 on the edge of the Simpson Desert. Enjoy 2 days of racing action and 3 nights of live entertainment, fashions on the field, Fred Brophy's boxing tent, a giant auction and much more.
This is desert thoroughbred racing at its best - with fun, fashion and folly.
There is limited accommodation available in Birdsville during race week; camping sites are available at the Birdsville Caravan Park or overflow camping with limited facilities is available along the banks of the Diamantina River.
