Isa Rodeo Celebrations

Located in Outback Queensland, Mount Isa hosts the largest and richest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere - The  Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo!

Held annually on the second weekend of August the Xstrata Isa Rodeo is held at Buchanan Park, Mount Isa’s brand new multi-million dollar facility with a purpose built rectangular arena and time-event tunnel in line with those in the United States. A world class arena for a world class rodeo.

The event has come a long way since its conception and now offers a rodeo festival that attracts over 25,000 visitors to Mount Isa. Experience three days of non-stop rodeo action as the best of local and overseas competitors compete for prestige and prize money in excess of $200,000.00

Other festivities include:

Rodeo Ball – A night of glitz and glamour before the dust kicking begins. The Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Queen Entrants' fundraising efforts throughout the year are rewarded when the Rodeo Queen and Rodeo Charity Queen are announced and crowned.

Best Dressed Premises- The rodeo spirit kicks off early with the whole community getting involved in the Best Dressed Premises Competition. At least 20 nominations are received each year to be in the running for the Best Dressed Business Premises, Best Window Display, Most Appropriately Dressed Staff, Best Dressed School and Best Dressed Non-Profit or Community Organisation.

Zonta Bush Poets Breakfast- Over a hot buffet breakfast, everyone is entertained by 4-5 poets, including some local talent as they recite their bush poetry. A good time and a few laughs are had by all each year.

Bull Pit - Experience additional rodeo action and dust kicking, with the action packed bull ride and bareback competition held in the Bull Pit arena. The Bull Pit is generally one of the more popular events during rodeo week..

The Mailman Express Sprint Horse Race - An event named after Wally Mailman, the Mailman Express is a 200 metre sprint from a running start that is open to non-thoroughbred horses and the winner takes all.

Mardi Gras Street Parade – Floats, fun and thousands of fans line the streets surrounding Buchanan Park with wall-to-wall people enjoying entertainment, dancing, carnival rides and cotton candy.
