Broken Hill St Patricks Race Day (Horse Racing)
The Broken Hill St Patrick’s Race Club began in early 1965 when John Toms, a well-known local trainer thought of a way to boost local racing and help alleviate the desperate financial position of the local Catholic schools.
During a game of golf with Catholic administrator, Father Pat Murray, John suggested that by using volunteer labour from within the Catholic School system, they could establish an annual race meeting offering attractive prize money, trophies, food and drink and later – fashions on the field.
Excited by the prospect, they discussed the idea with other racing enthusiasts & a committee was formed to commence planning for the inaugural race meeting on Saturday, 19 March 1966.
Now more than forty five years on, the phenomenal success of the race meeting continues to grow with TAB status and viewed on Sky Channel, the eight race program offers total prize money & trophies of over $130,000 drawing trainers and race day patrons to our city from every state in Australia.
Named as one of Outback Australia's premier horse racing events, Broken Hill's St Patricks Race Day is on 17th March 2012.
Fashions on the field are a major part of the St Pats racing day with $20,000 in prizes up for grabs. The 7 sections are judged by high profile media personalities, well know local business identities and judges from within the fashion industry.
So if you're looking for a great day full of fun, fame and fanciness come dressed to win (in your favourite St Pats day colours)
