Bourke Tours and Attractions
Back O Bourke Exhibition Centre
One of the star attractions along the Kidman Way would have to be the Back O’ Bourke Exhibition Centre which also houses the town’s Visitor Information Centre.
Set on the banks of the Darling River in a stunning, modern and architecturally pleasing building, the centre tells the real-life story of the settlement of Bourke, its people and their relationship with the Darling River; isolation, conflicts, legends and explorers, and the illusive inland sea (now known as the Great Artesian Basin)
‘Meet’ people like C.E.W Bean, E.D. Millen and Henry Lawson, Writers and Historians as they tell us their story of Bourke and the Back Country, of struggle, adversity and triumph, drought and flood and the impact of war.
Legends like John Flynn, Will Ogilvie, Fred Hollows, Breaker Morant and Charles Sturt will have you enthralled along with stories of the courageous women of the Outback.
You will learn of the wool story, river trade and pastoralists; transport and communications – paddleboats, Afghan Cameleers and Cobb & Co as well as Aboriginal occupation and history all presented in a thought provoking and entertaining way.
After your experience enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat overlooking the Darling floodplain in the Back O’ Bourke café before setting off on another journey aboard the PV Jandra to explore the Darling River and learn more about the regions rich river boat history.
Packages for both the Back O’ Bourke Exhibition Centre and PV Jandra are available at the Visitor Information Centre along with gifts and souvenirs of your visit to this unique outback Australian Town. Allow a half day to fully appreciate all that the centre has to offer.
