Copperfield
Visit the ghost town of Copperfield
In 1862, a 10m wall of solid copper ore was discovered at Copperfield, 7km south of Clermont on the Rubyvale Road.
It was the start of Queensland’s first copper mine and it continued its operation until the best quality ore was mined out in the 1880s.
The site of the Copperfield township and the copper mine is testimony to the changing fortunes of the mining industry.
All that remains of the once thriving community is a single smelter chimney stack and general store.
The bricks of the chimney stacks were made by Welsh tradesmen and its glossy finish was achieved by powdering glass and sprinkling it on the surface.
The Copperfield store however, remained in the hands of one family for almost 100 years before it was donated to the Belyando Shire Council.
The store is an interesting trip back in time as it still has the same merchandise on the shelves, it did the day the store closed for business.
