About Mungindi

Mungindi is a small town on the Carnarvon Hwy between Moree & St George Qld that straddles the border near the point that the Barwon River becomes the NSW/Qld border. Mungindi is unique in so far as that it is the only town in Australia with town boundaries in 2 states; the Moree Plains Shire in NSW and the Balonne Shire in Qld and has 2 time zones in the warmer months due to eastern daylight savings time in NSW.

First discovered in 1831 by Sir Thomas Mitchell the district is rich in Aboriginal history, the original inhabitants of the area being the Kamilaroi people and their word Mungindi meaning “Digging for Water Place”. Mungindi’s major produce is now wheat, cotton, wool, sheep and beef. The Mungindi Hot Artesian Pool & Swimming Complex is also a popular attraction.
