Mention Tamworth and you’ll probably immediately think country music. It’s the Country Music Capital – the centre of the universe when it comes to the January event that attracts about 50,000 visitors from all over the world.
Tamworth is in north west NSW, at the junction of the New England and Oxley highways, an easy five hour drive from Sydney and six from Brisbane.
The main street is a vibrant pretty place with a boulevarde atmosphere where you can sip coffee or dine out under the trees or watch the passing parade. Surrounded by some of the richest agricultural land in the country the area around Tamworth provides spectacular scenery, fresh, clean country air and open spaces.
The Tamworth Country Music Festival is a great place to be. It’s an entertainment bonanza where all types of country music co-exist and where everyone can get a gig – about 800 artists make up 2500 acts in 120 different venues. It’s the home of the Golden Guitars - the Academy Awards of country music.
Visitors arrive all year round to soak up the music atmosphere. There’s more than 20 different country music icons to check out, from the 12 metre Golden Guitars to wax museums, busker boulevarde, archives, songmaker tributes in walls, and bronze busts, rolls of renown, Hands of Fame and an interactive interpretive centre of music memorabilia.
There are more than 160 parks and open spaces around Tamworth – from the mid centre Bicentennial parkland to the Botanic Gardens and sports fields and play places.
A leader in equine events, with national titles and international competitors, in early 2006 construction began of a new world class Equine and Livestock Centre.
