About Walgett

The Wonder of Walgett

Walgett is located by the Namoi River near its junction with the Barwon River in northern NSW, 696 km north-west of Sydney via Wee Waa and 114 km north of Coonamble.  The town is surrounded by rich agricultural land and was once a thriving centre of the outback.

The region is well known for it's excellent fishing conditions and boasts some of the best fishing locations.  It is home to eight magnificent rivers, perfect for fishing and other recreational activities.

The Jewel in the Crown

Walgett proclaims itself the 'Gateway to the Opal Fields' as it is situated on the road that leads north to Lightning Ridge (76 km) and north-west to the Grawin, Glengarry and Sheepyard Opal Fields.

Be careful of Skippy

From Walgett to either Collarenebri or Lightning Ridgeis only about 45 minutes drive .  The roads are long and straight with little traffic, but do be careful as there are many kangaroos, and hitting them, doesn't make for happy travelling.
