About Jindabyne

Jindabyne is a town in south-east New South Waleslocated approximately 460kms south of the state capital – Sydney. The town overlooks Lake Jindabyne near the scenic Snowy Mountains and is affectionately thought of as ‘the gateway to the snowy mountains’. The name ‘Jindabyne’ originated from an aboriginal word meaning 'valley'.

Home to approximately 2000 people, Jindabyne is one of the highest settlements of its size in Australia (and it can sometime receive light snowfalls during winter). The town was originally situated in an area that is now part of Lake Jindabyne, however due to the damming of the Snowy River in the 1960s, the township was moved to its current location - 918 metres above sea level.

A general store, post office, school and police station were erected within the town following the brief gold rush in 1859. In 1894, the decision was made to release rainbow trout into the Snowy River which began a fishing tradition which still continues today. Along with fishing, Lake Jindabyne also attracts tourists (particularly in summer) with activities such as water skiing and wakeboarding.

Due to the town’s close proximity to several ski resorts throughout the Kosciuszko National Park (including Thredbo and Perisher), the town is heavily tourist-oriented throughout the winter months also, with a large range of snow-sport rental outlets and accommodation facilities.

Whether tourists visit the Snowy Mountains and Jindabyne in summer or winter, there is plenty to do and see. You can climb Mt Kosciusko, go horse riding (man from Snowy River style), fishing or water skiing on Lake Jindabyne, take a walk or relax and have something to eat or drink in one of the town’s many bars, clubs and restaurants.

Accommodation options within the town of Jindabyne include; motels, apartments and lodges.
