Charters Towers - Gold and Ghosts

A scenic gold mining city big on history and character 90 minutes south-west of Townsville, Charters Towers is arguably the most beautiful inland city in Queensland. From a chance discovery of gold in 1871, Charters Towers was soon turned into a bustling metropolis, which in its heyday, was the second largest city in Queensland.

Charters Towers Attractions

Begin with Devonshire Tea on the verandah of the beautifully restored Ay Ot Lookout House. This two-storey home is said to have the ghost of previous owner Thomas Smith still in residence.

At the Visitor Information Centre, see the Orientation Film and the Calling of the Card in the Stock Exchange Arcade.

• The World Theatre is a 660-seat performing arts theatre complex.
• The Venus Gold Battery, Queensland's oldest gold stamp battery, has a guided tour. You’ll surely be amazed watching the ghosts come alive on the water screens.
• Charters Towers has a large number of elegant and historically significant buildings such as the Zara Clark Museum, The Post Office the elegant Boer War Memorial Rotunda, the old Court House and St Columba's Bell Tower, which has been designed to look like a mine poppet head.
• Towers Hill Lookout has interpretive displays and an amphitheatre with a film about the history of Charters Towers.
