About Rolleston

On the doorstep of the Carnarvon Gorge National Park

Rolleston is located in the Bauhinia Shire of Queensland's Central Highlands and is the nearest town to the world renowned Carnarvon Gorge National Park. Rolleston is 70 kilometres east of Springsure and can be reached by travelling along the Great Inland Way.

The newly assigned Albinia National Park runs nearly to the town and is home to many rare native pastures.

A journey through the Arcadia Valley; once home to the indigenous ‘Karinal’ tribe, takes you to the unusual Lake Nuga Nuga, believed by the local indigenous tribe to be the home of the mythological male and female Rainbow Serpent’s called ‘ Mundagarri’ who live under the two peaks dominating the Lakes northern shoreline. It is believed that the Lake itself will dry up if these serpents are disturbed and leave.

Boasting a diverse pastoral history, the township of Rolleston was also famous for the notorious Patrick and James Kenniff – Queensland’s last legendary bushrangers.

The boundary rider's hut from 'Purbook' has been resited and restored at Beazley Park as a memorial to the area's pioneers.
