Barcaldine is located 1080 km north west of Brisbane and is a wool growing and cattle raising district. The town is well known for its famous Tree of Knowledge. The 150-year-old ghost gumtree is a memorial to the shearers who held their strike meetings there.
Greatest labour disturbance in Australia's polictical history
In 1891, local shearers' met to strike against working conditions. The unions had begun to amalgamate and centralise as workers began to see their fates interlinked. The striking spread from industry to industry resembling a virtual civil war. This played an important role in the events which led to the formation of the Australian Labor Party.
Cultural Diversity
Barcaldine has a diverse range of attractions and history. You can take in an artesian country tour, see aboriginal carvings, lava blow holes, desert springs, gorges, caves and a sapphire mine. The Australian Workers Heritage Centre is a must and Lloyd Jones Weir is a quiet scenic area for picnics.
