Outback Towns

The picturesque mountain village of Kuranda - 25km northwest of Cairns is surrounded by World Heritage Rainforest and a world away.

About Kuranda

Kuranda was first surveyed in 1888 having been settled a few years earlier. The arrival if both the railway and road linking the Port of Cairns to the mining towns west of the tablelands led to an influx of tourists lured by the lush rainforest and magnificent Barron Falls, earning Kuranda a reputation as Cairns’ playground.

The now heritage listed railway that winds its way up the range to the beautiful Kuranda Railway Station is just one way to get there and the Skyrail Cableway  is a great way to return. A vibrant arts and craft culture can be seen at the Kuranda Rainforest Markets and Kuranda Heritage Markets (opposite), as well as nearly every shop in the village. Attractions such as the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld Kuranda, Kuranda Koala Gardens, Australian Venom Zoo, Kuranda Riverboat Tours and some amazing rainforest walks will keep you entertained for hours.
