About Mount Garnet

Mount Garnet is a small town on the Savannah Way south west of Cairns. Originally founded on the discovery of copper (and garnets) in 1882, mining operations continued until the early 1900’s when the Mt Garnet Freehold Copper and Silver Mining Company closed. The town languished until tin mining began in 1928 and several cattle stations and farms were settled.

Today zinc, copper, lead, silver and lime are mined in the area.

16 Kilometres east of Mount Garnet is Innot Hot Springs, a natural mineral springs flowing into Nettle Creek beside which is the Innot Hot Springs Leisure & Health Park – a campground with 6 hot pools to choose from. 6 Km north-west of Innot Hot Springs, Mount Gibson Fossicking Area has been set aside for tourists and recreational fossickers. A Fossickers Licence is required.
