About Mt Surprise

Mount Surprise is a small town on the Savannah Way (Gulf Developmental Road) in the Gulf Savannah region of Far North Queensland.

The settlement first struggled into existence as a sheep run in the 1860’s but soon after, the discovery of gold led to a gold rush and establishment of the town. The railway arrived in town in 1908.

Today, Mt Surprise’s position on the edge of the immense Undara lava field and short distance to renowned O’Brien’s Creek gem fields makes it a popular stopover for tourists and fossickers.

Undara Volcanic National Park and 40 Mile Scrub National Park are nearby and Mount Surprise is also a stop on the Savannahlander weekly tourist train, one of Australia’s great rail experiences – running from Cairns to Forsayth and return.
