Mitchell – Great Artesian Spa
Mitchell is a community in transition. This Maranoa River town, 568km west of Brisbane is along the Warrego Highway. Fine old colonial buildings represent early history.
The Kenniff Courthouse was the original courthouse where the infamous bushrangers Patrick and James Kenniff were committed to stand trial for the murder of a policeman and station manager in 1902.
Upstream from the Neil Turner Weir, Fisherman's Rest is a peaceful picnic and fishing spot with abundant flora and fauna and is the perfect location for a relaxed picnic.
The Great Artesian Spa complex consists of two pools set in landscaped billabong like surrounds. The Water, naturally heated to 43 degrees Celsius, is pumped from the deep underground Great Artesian Basin. It has absorbed an abundance of minerals from deep within the earth's core. Local legend says that waters from the Great Artesian Basin have mythical healing powers.
Take a town tour and visit Neil Turner Weir, Rotary Park and the beautiful old pubs and shops that line the main street.
35 km west from Mitchell are the ancient Ooline bottle trees standing guard over the nearby hotel. This roadside rest for travelers creates an awareness of the significance of these relics of previous times.
Nearby Tregole National Park presents a mosaic of mulga scrub, rolling, brigalow plains and box floodplains. The park conserves large stands of Ooline trees.
