About Goondiwindi

Gallop into Gundy
360km from Brisbane sits a monument to a local legend. Not another explorer or pioneer of this country, but a horse. Not just any horse, but Gunsynd, the Goondiwindi Grey. This champion galloper of the late 60's- early 70's captured the heart of Australian Racing winning some of the country's biggest races (29 in total). To the locals and people of the Outback in general, Gunsynd showed that from humble beginnings in somewhat of a remote location, anything is possible.
Cotton on to these local attractions
Being on the doorstep to Australias largest cotton growing area, Goondiwindi acts as a trade centre servicing this industry, including major machinery dealerships, silos and cotton gins, one of which being one of the largest in the world, which is open to tourists. It is this cotton industry and the other usual suspects, wheat, beef, and wool which predominately keep the 11000 or so residents in work. Other attractions to see are the old Customs House, which houses a good collection of old memorabilia, the botanical gardens and Boobera Lagoon wildlife sanctuary.
Goondiwindi’s Gunsynd Way is proving popular with motorists using the route in ever increasing numbers.
The Gunsynd Way links the town’s tourism precinct with the Newell Highway via a three-kilometre road. Motorists using the road enter into Queensland via the historic border bridge, past the statue of Gunsynd and the historic Customs House Museum to the town’s Visitor Information Centre.
According to Goondiwindi Town Councillor, David McMahon, the road seems to very popular during the peak tourism season with southerners pulling caravans using the road in larger numbers each year.
“Caravanners, seem to like using the Gunsynd Way because it leads them straight to the Visitor Information Centre. Once there they can get all their information about Goondiwindi.
