Roadside Cairn commemorating railway workers efforts

In common with Miles and Dulacca, Drillham originated as a railway service town in 1878. A railway weir provided water for steam locomotives and a camp was established while a bridge was built over the river. Reminders of the hardships endured by the railway workers can be seen today in the form of roadside cairns commemorating their efforts. The town of Drillham soon became a thriving centre for regional settlers, and the area became known for its quaility grain crops and livestock, a reputation the district enjoys to this day.
