St George’s Day (April 23)

Several stories have been attached to Saint George, the best known of which is the Golden Legend. In it, a dragon lived in a lake near Silena, Libya. Whole armies had gone up against this fierce creature, and had gone down in painful defeat. The monster ate two sheep each day; when mutton was scarce, lots were drawn in local villages, and maidens were substituted for sheep. Into this country came Saint George. Hearing the story on a day when a princess was to be eaten, he crossed himself, rode to battle against the serpent, and killed it with a single blow with his lance. Given a large reward by the king, George distributed it to the poor, then rode away.
This story of St George typifies the courage and open hearts of the people of the Outback with the creature taking shape in the form of droughts, floods and isolation. It's the little bit of St George in all of these men and women that make the Australian Outback such an incredible place. I think when St George retired from fighting dragons he would of happily called this little town home.

St George

Located on the western side of Qld cotton country approx. 550km from Brisbane St George sits along side the beautiful Ballonne River where visitors and locals are kept busy fishing, boating, swimming, canoing and water-skiing. Whether it be in captivity or in the wild St George has one of the greatest populations of birds in Australia. Other attractions not to miss also include the Historic Museum, the illuminated Emu eggs and the Aboriginal rock pools. The fishing here is nothing short of exceptional, with locals reporting Murray Cod up to 100 pounds!

A long way from home

One of St George's most famous sons was Warrant Officer Leonard Victor Waters. This man showed his true St George spirit by becoming the only known Aboriginal fighter pilot to serve in WWII. His name is remembered on a pilots' memorial opposite the St George Visitor Information Centre on the Balonne River.
