Dirranbandi has a population of approx 800 people, it is situated 100 kms south of St George on the Great Inland Way.

Life is dandy, living in Dirranbandi!

Well atleast the locals think so. Really!, they seem to be a happy bunch, always willing to stop and have a chat with a passing tourist.

Unlike some outback towns where the locals look at you like you're an alien, the 800 people here on the Castlereagh Highway(aka. G.I. Way) are used to strange faces because of the high number of casual workers coming to town for cotton harvest season (nov-jan.) and the extremly strong local wool industry.

Dirranbandi certainly does it's part to support the outback economy, being home of course to a lot of cotton, one local property, Cubbie Station , is the largest privately owned cotton property in the Southern Hemisphere. There is also a Cotton Gin and a strong local business group providing  more than ample service.

“Frogs around the waterhole.”

The history behind the name Dirranbandi suggests it means 'swamp abounding in frogs and waterfowl' or “frogs around the waterhole.”

If frogs, waterfowl and waterholes wet your whistle than a suggested stopover in nearby Culgoa Flood Plains National Park should be organised through the local ranger in charge. (stay tuned for his details)
