Australian Age of Dinosaurs Natural History Museum

Situated high up on a rugged jump-up plateau a short distance from Winton in Western Queensland is the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Natural History Museum, home to Banjo and Matilda.

The reception and administration centre, café and temperature controlled fossil display and storage room is housed in an architecturally stunning building that enjoys views over the surrounding plains. Join a guided tour and view the exciting new 3D digital theatre with animations of Australian dinosaurs, listen to the fascinating story of our prehistoric past and enjoy our amazing dinosaur fossil collection. Relax with coffee and cake or lunch on the deck at the new café and gift shop.

A short walk away a large hangar-style building houses the world's largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils and the prep laboratory. Learn about these and many other fossils and see staff working on real dinosaur bones, cleaning away the rock entombing the bones in preparation for display in the museum.

For the more adventurous the Australian Age of Dinosaurs offers several walking trails and some unique and exciting experiences:

Work with the scientists to prepare some of the 100 million-year-old dinosaur bones in the biggest fossil preparation laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere and help bring Australia's prehistoric giants back to life. Not enough action… Well perhaps you would prefer to dig up your own sauropod or theropod.  Join the Australian Age of Dinosaurs palaeontologists on a real life dinosaur excavation in the field 60 kms from Winton. You never know what you’re likely to turn up. (No experience necessary – fees apply and positions are limited)

To tell you more about this extraordinary time the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum of Natural History  produces an annual Award Winning Journal in full colour documenting Australia’s natural history from the Age of Dinosaurs.  Each issue has a collection of different stories on Australia’s fascinating dinosaurs and their environment, along with graphic images and the places they’re found. It is an unmatched source of Australian paleontological history and those who make it.
