Saturday, October 1, 2011

The Garnduwa Festival has beed held each year since 1992 and has become the pre-eminent Indigenous festival of its type in WA if not Australia. Upwards of 5000 people attend over the 5 day period.

As part of the Garnduwa Festival, the remote communities football and athletics championship attracts up to 20 teams from remote communities throughout the Kimberley, Pilbara and Northern Territory. The football championships which run over 5 days consists of 2 divisions, one which is for participants from major communities and towns and the other for teams from smaller remote communities. In conjunction with football there will be an athletics competition which will be open to males and females of all ages. There will be sprints, relays and long distance events. The competition will provide athletics opportunities for those who would not normally have the opprtunity to participate in such events.

Garnduwa's philosophy is to maximise the Indigenous population's participation in meaningful and healthy lifestyle activities across the sport and recreation spectrum of programs.
