Explorer Charles Sturt referred to a ‘broken hill’ in his diary, when describing and naming the Barrier Ranges in 1844.

This ‘broken hill’ was home to a large silver-lead-zinc orebody, and although, due to mining, the ‘broken hill’ referred to in the diary no longer exists, the mining town of Broken Hill is very much still alive.

Broken Hill is colloquially referred to as ‘The Silver City’, evidently due to the mining of silver from the local mineral deposit.

The Silver City Cup will be held at the Broken Hill Racecourse in October each year.

The $15,000 ‘Silver City Cup’ leads a full day of racing, together with the 5 supporting races offer $50,000 total winnings.

The day is to be filled with fun for all ages, including pony rides, face painting and a jumping castle for the kids and a public bar, food stalls, bookies, on-course tote and coverage of other major interstate races for the ‘grown-ups’.

A fully catered Silver City Cup marquee – located in prime position at the edge of the track for a bird’s eye view of the races – is expected to be a welcome addition for racegoers.

There is ‘Fashions on the Field’ with prizes for Most Elegant Silver City Lady, the Trendiest Chick and Country Casual Male, as well as Best Dressed Girl and Boy.

Seating for the event is plentiful, with groups of 10 or more being able to purchase picnic sites with a table, chairs and an esky of ice and Club Members having access to the Grandstand and Members Bar.

Club members are also entitled to a free race book, members badge and entry into the members prize draw!

For a memorable day, filled with friends, family, fun for everyone and maybe even a prize or two, come on down to the Silver City Cup in Broken Hill!

The John O'Brien Festival has unfortunately been cancelled for 2017. We look forward to it's return in 2018.

Bush poetry, Irish music sessions and dancing, as well as top class performances of humour, word and song, contribute to an authentic outback Australian event.

Head off to the Narrandera John O’Brien Festival of bush poetry and music.

The Festival provides three days of poetry, music, culture and fun activities for the whole family in the beautiful town of Narrandera

Come along and join the locals and help us celebrate this annual event in honour of the famous Australian poet John O’Brien, who lived and worked as Narrandera’s Parish Priest for many years.

Heaps of new talent will add freshness to proceedings over the four days; but there will also be the festival favourites who will be at their entertaining best… poets, storytellers, musicians, and dancers.

Australia’s Bush Poet Champions past and present rub shoulders with the new chums, leaving a liberal legacy of laughter to brighten your visit.

Features include an Art Show, poets’ breakfasts and competitions, yarns “Around the Boree Log”, buskers, stalls, street entertainment, bush dancing, wine tasting, and Poetry, Port and Pottage!

The Street Carnival this year features a Carnival Conga.

Local groups, clubs and schools, along with Festival visitors are all invited to dress up and join the Conga Line!

Great prizes for the bestdressed, the most outrageous, and the funniest.

Variety is part of our festival spice, so while on location in Narrandera enjoy visits to:

  • Parkside Cottage Museum (where Macarthur’s coat is on display)
  • Can Assist Book Sale (with hundreds of books and magazines of all types to choose from)
  • Eco Tour (with running commentary and the chance to see koalas up close)
  • A visit to the Inland Fisheries Centre to see the huge freshwater fish aquariums.

Narrandera in March is the place to be!

Celebrating Barcaldine’s colourful past and the beautiful town it is today are several events and activities that together make up The Barcaldine Tree Of Knowledge Festival.

Barcaldine’s settlement began when a descendant of the Campbell’s of Barcaldine Castle in Scotland took up land on the Alice River and a railway line was constructed to the area in 1864.

Barcaldine’s fame arrived in 1891 when the Great Shearers Strike (marching under the “Eureka” flag), was held under the boughs of The Tree Of Knowledge, heralding the formation of the political movement we now know as the Australian Labor Party.

Offering something to enthral every member of the family, the Tree Of Knowledge Festival kicks off on Friday with Rugby League at the Barcaldine Showgrounds.

On Saturday,

  • Street Parade in honour of the May Day tradition (Main St to Showgrounds)
  • Barcaldine Showgrounds Markets
  • Goat Racing heats
  • Live music, novelty events and more
  • Barcaldine Race Club’s Tree of Knowledge Cup (Barcaldine Racecourse)
  • Saturday Night Town Party featuring Live Bands (Barcaldine Showgrounds)
  • Revfest Cruise and Show and Shine
  • Goat Racing Finals and Barcaldine Regional Council Tree of Knowledge Festival Cup
  • Market and food stalls, Licensed bar

And on Sunday

  • The rubber-burning Barcy Rev Fest Drag Racing (Barcaldine Aerodrome)
  • Ecumenical Service at Town Hall Park
  • Music in the park
  • Junior Rugby League action including
  • The Converted Tree Of Knowledge Shield (Barcaldine Showgrounds)

When the festivities draw to a close why not spend a few days exploring this history-rich town in outback Queensland, home to the Australian Workers Heritage Centre, Between the Bougainvillea’s Heritage Trail and it’s dozens of beautifully restored buildings.

An adventure of a lifetime!

Welcome to the Harry Redford Cattle Drive, the ultimate, authentic, true blue, fair dinkum Aussie outback experience.

Over 14 unforgettable, spectacular days, some of Australia´s most experienced drovers will drive approximately 600 head of cattle by horseback through the twists of the rugged Redford trail, reliving one of the world´s greatest cattle duffing drives known to man.

This 2 week trek takes in some of the most impressive scenery in the Aramac Shire.

How long you go is up to you! Packages range from 5 day to 9 days (including pre & post accommodation)! For the first week a 9 day minimum applies. You will be instructed how to ride a horse and drive the cattle throughout the day. Horses are provided, matched to riders and spelled during the day for you.

Expect to see spectacular desert country, amazing claypans and the brilliant Mitchell grass plains as your journey takes in 200 kilometres from Lake Dunn (near Aramac) to Muttaburra.

With wide-open rolling plains, natural lakes, historical Aboriginal sites and a sky that stretches from one horizon to the other – spectacular by day and glowing with stars by night.

A land with some of the oldest geology on the planet; it´s a vast, uncompromising land that turns everyday battlers into heroes and legends.

To visit here is to experience the vastness of  Outback Queensland.

Each day the support crew sets up camp, and offers hearty camp oven cooking for you to enjoy. Breakfast, morning smoko, lunch, afternoon smoko and evening meal are provided.

Camping is under the stars and an authentic droving experience.

The team at Outbacknow have had the pleasure and privilege of joining the Harry Redford crew and guest drovers over 2 evenings during the 2012 drive. The atmosphere could only be described as exhilarating around the campfire in the evening. The food was first class and at an impromptu “awards” ceremony the guest drovers (some of whom were repeat guests) from all walks of life agreed unanimously that the Harry Redford Cattle Drive was a highlight of their life, The holiday of a lifetime and many vowed to return.

Please Note: Dates to be confirmed and due to Drought this event may need to be cancelled.

Drive up to Hungerford from Bourke and the local’s joke that you have to open the gate to enter their town; the gate they are referring to is in the Dog fence which stretches from The Great Australian Bite to the Darling Downs, just one of the many things to see out this way. Another, in June biennially (odd years) is the Hungerford Field Day hosted by Hungerford Progress Assoc. Inc. and the field day has been going from strength to strength for about 28 years; such is its popularity.

Visitors from far & wide drive in or fly in to take advantage of the businesses that exhibit their goods and services at Ross Wallace Sports Ground, from all over NSW, as well as SA & Qld. There are bulls, rams and working dogs from Cattle & Sheep Studs and breeders as well as tourism displays, stalls selling swags, camping goods, UHF radios, leather goods, electrical goods for the home and office; cosmetics and beauty, others with locally made jewellery, an opal display, a craft display and haberdashery.  There is even a hairdresser.

Displays of work clothes, a bush outfitter, tools, fencing display, poly tanks, troughs, gardening implements and supplies, motor bikes, irrigation, water pumps and generators, a stock and station agent and a steel and rural merchant have their goods on show and for sale; all part of a good old fashioned country field day.

The National Parks & Wildlife Service has live snakes, bilbies and lizards on show, the RFDS and McGrath Foundation nurse conduct health checks alongside displays from the Rural Fire Service, local Catchment Management Authority, Dept. Agriculture, Paroo Contact Children's Mobile Play Group and Rural Financial Counsellors.

A traditional camp oven dinner is available at the Historic Royal Mail Hotel on the Thursday night and catering and bar facilities are available from Thursday evening till Saturday morning. Friday evening sees a giant auction in aid of the RFDS and McGrath Foundation– auctioning goods donated by many of the exhibitors before the band takes to the stage signalling an end to the day’s formalities.

Camping is permitted at the grounds or at the Caravan Park in town, so if you’re anywhere near Hungerford at the beginning of June, make sure you use the Hungerford Field Day as an excuse to see more of this beautiful area.

Hungerford is accessed along the Dowling Track from either Bourke NSW (212 kms) or Thargomindah (166 kms) or through Currawinya NP from Eulo (120kms). All 3 routes involve a fair component of formed gravel roads but the detour to experience Hungerford, Currawinya NP and Thargomindah is well worth while.

Muttaburra is one of five communities within the 53677 sq km Barcaldine Regional Council area and is the most remote. Muttaburra is located at the geographical Centre of Queensland about 1.5 hours north of both Longreach and Barcaldine.

The Landsborough Flock Ewe Show attracts people of all ages including families with children who are well catered for at this very popular two day rural Festival. Visitors from outside the area describe it as a ‘highlight’ and The Harry Redford Cattle Drive has in the past culminated at the Show, swelling the crowd with tourists from out of the area.

This well run event held at the Muttaburra Race Course captures the imagination of locals and visitors alike and gives them the opportunity to attend a day that caters for a variety of interests.

The main focus of the day is to promote our local industries. Sheep/wool and cattle competitions are held along with extensive displays of farm equipment available for sale together with the latest in technology and work/health and safety, vegetation management & grazing practises by both Government departments & Private enterprise companies.

The Pavilion is a hive of activity with the sale & display of crafts, gifts, soft furnishings, all manner of fashion accessories, jewellery, shoes and hats, photographs, art, and a plant nursery.  It is a worthwhile opportunity for local artists of all disciplines to showcase their wares.

A popular crowd pleaser of the day is the afternoon Fashion Parade and live entertainment at night.

A very small dedicated committee plan, organise & run the day and all work on a volunteer basis.  There is no charge for admittance to the Event.  It has a very typical bush theme & showcases Rural Queensland in a friendly atmosphere, with great pride.  This Event promotes the social, cultural & economic benefits of our Community and has previously won ‘Event of the Year’.

Queensland caravan show to showcase latest and greatest

Travel enthusiasts are expected to roll into Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds in their tens of thousands when one of Australia’s largest caravan exhibitions, the Queensland Caravan, Camping and Touring Holiday Show  is held in June 2017.

Showcasing the latest for holidaymakers and road travelers, the show continues to be staged at Brisbane’s iconic RNA Showgrounds in areas unaffected by the current redevelopment.

Reflecting the continued popularity of touring holidays across couples, families and retirees, the show will cater for the budget camper through to the deluxe motorhome devotee.

The show will feature nearly 300 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations, services, and destinations, along with informative and entertaining seminars and displays.

Last year, more than 70,000 people visited the show and organisers are expecting a similarly strong attendance this year with renewed interest in affordable Australian holidays.

Visitors to this year’s show will also have the opportunity to win a caravan, complete with a tinnie and outboard motor.

Today, there are about 400,000 caravans, motorhomes and camper trailers registered in Australia, making it one of the world’s most caravan-friendly countries. There are 112,000 registered in Queensland alone.

Please Note….

Parking is limited at the RNA Showgrounds and it is strongly recomended that you take advantage of the free train services and leave your car at Fortitude Valley, Central or Roma Street Station.

Alice Springs is one of Australia’s unique towns and it is only fitting that the Alice Springs Beanie Festival is one of the worlds’ most unique festivals – it sort of fits right in with racing boats up a dry riverbed….weird.

The four day festival celebrates non–indigenous and indigenous art and culture at its brilliant, creative finest through the humble beanie.

Thousands of them are created and decorated in many of the local communities, as well as nationally and internationally and brought to Alice Springs in search of the Holy Grail of fellowship in the beanie community.

The Alice Springs Beanie Festival is an opportunity to share this cross-cultural event with the world.

During the weekend Beanie Central will be home to over 6000 all-individual beanie creations and masterpieces – every one for sale and in need of a proud new owner.

Opening night of the Beanie Exhibition at Araluen Gallery is a serious affair akin to an art exhibition with competition winners announced and National Beanie Hall of Fame winner awarded.

Enjoy live music and entertainment, dancing and food.

Why not be a part of the Guinness World Book of Records attempt to make the longest beanie. Drop in anytime over the festival and do your bit.

There are children’s activities, Beanie Olympics, Indigenous art stalls, traditional bush tucker and bush medicine stalls, traditional indigenous spinning and several drop-in and free workshops covering knitting, weaving, felting, spinning and crochet; you can even create your own masterpiece at one of the textile and fibre workshops.

Other workshops include beading, dying, print making and wearable art.

Join the Tjanpi Desert Weavers Workshops and learn traditional indigenous basket weaving and learn how to make traditional bush medicines by local Arrernte elder women. Some workshops are free; most have a cover charge for materials.

The Beanie Festival is a non-profit organisation and proceeds are reinvested into the communities. Beanies are also donated to various charities and community organisations.

PS If you plan to be in Alice Springs in June, why not volunteer to help out at the Beanie Festival, your expertise will be put to good use during a fun 4 days that you will remember for a long time. Call the number below for details.

Marree & District Progress Association Inc. gives visitors the opportunity to experience their unique brand of outback culture (and humour) during the Marree Australian Camel Cup to be held at the Marree Racecourse in early July.

The event-filled day starts at 9 am and there are heaps of prizes to be won.

The 13 race program including the Marree Australian Camel Cup is a fun filled family day with Calcutta on the Cup, Fashions of the field, Licensed Bar & Catering, Sky Chanel & On-course Bookmakers; but that’s pretty much where similarities with other races end.

As if camels are not hard enough to steer towards the winning post, what about Donkey Races and Dog Races (otherwise known as mutts – definitely none of the Greyhound variety here), thrown in for good measure.

A Tug Of War – against a camel (what else?) where half-a-dozen punters pit their strength against a tonne of slobbering bad breath; and Camel Polo (can you imagine that?) will be hilarious – it’s near-impossible to get camels to go where you want them to go anyway…

And what about Hole-in-one (golf) – where one of the officials wanders about 30 metres out into the middle of the race track & buries a plastic cup amongst the divots and you’re supposed to get a golf ball into the cup in one shot…good luck with that, I think their $100.00 prize money seems pretty safe.

There’s also Children’s entertainment, Foot Races, Lolly Toss, Children’s Fashions of the Field and heaps more including live music to keep you rocking well into the night.

Then, if you haven’t had enough of camels; head 700 kms up the Birdsville Track (for another adventure) through Birdsville to Bedourie and enjoy The Western Queensland Camel Festival; Bedourie, Boulia and Winton Camel Races over the next 3 weekends for some more outback fun.

This much fun should be illegal….

The Birdsville Big Red Bash has already become a bucket list item for families and travellers who want an authentic outback experience and the thrill of a rock concert under the biggest star studded skies in the world.

The three-day desert camping and concert gig will fall during the July school holidays – July 10th to 12th, 2018  at the Simpson Desert’s iconic Big Red sand dune allowing families to take their children on an outback adventure to the heart of Australia.

Big Red sand dune offers both an awesome backdrop to the main stage and an energy-sapping, sand-pit playground for kids of all ages.

The last Bash saw cartwheels and back-flips; boogie boards, pieces of cardboard and even the odd esky lid and their riders surfing down the Big Red sand dune.

Some of the biggest names across Australian country music, pop and rock attended the 2017 Birdsville Big Red Bash, with headliners Lee Kernaghan and James Reyne & Mark Seymour. Joining them were some of the most talented and cherished Australian musical acts in rock and country history, with Ian Moss, Kate Ceberano, Russell Morris and Ray Ryder in tow; an incredible day of rock ‘n roll. The 2018 headliners, full artist line up and ticket pricing and inclusions will be announced ahead of tickets going on sale in November.

The tent-city that emerges in the desert, will be dubbed ‘Bashville’; and will provide free daily entertainment for the kids in the form of Discover Australia – fun and educational workshops filled with Australian bush songs and anecdotes connecting back to the early history of Australia.

Birdsville is one of Australia’s most iconic outback towns, perched on the edge of the vast Simpson and Sturt Stony deserts and the famous Channel Country. Despite its isolation and wild foreboding country, it has been named Queensland’s friendliest town and its famous pub is noted for true outback hospitality.

The Bash also falls between two other exciting outback events – the Bedourie Gymkhana and Rodeo and the Bedourie Pig and Camel Races. Create an outback itinerary while you’re in the region and start ticking off those bucket list experiences.

During the Friday and Saturday you can win gold nuggets (valued at $50 each) on the  “gold wheel” (like a “ham wheel” only the prize is gold nuggets)

There are lucky spot prizes and second prize certificates provided by GoldFest's generous sponsors up for grabs throughout the weekend.

Enjoy a serious case of gold fever with good food to enjoy, entertainment, market stalls and the chance to win gold nuggets and jewellery.

The Clermont GoldFest seeks to promote Clermont, its attractions and businesses with a special emphasis on our gold prospecting heritage. Local schools, professional and local musicians and bush poets all make it a great celebration.

After the festival why not stay on for a few days to enjoy some more of Clermont; popular places to visit include the Clermont Museum and Clermont Cemetary, Copperfield township – a ghost town with smelter chimney and old Copperfield Store the only things still standing, Hoods Lagoon – the site of old Clermont before floods necessitated it's move to higher ground, Theresa Creek Dam – a popular camp spot, Red Claw & fishing spot or perhaps do a bit of gold prospecting in the area.

Australia is known as a very big island nation. At its geographic centre 1,500 kilometres from the coast is Alice Springs, which hosts the famous Henley-on-Todd Regatta each August – albeit on a usually dry river bed.

This mad-cap event celebrates Alice Springs in a way like no other and Alice Springs Rotary Clubs have had over 50 years to perfect the one-day event.

The hilarious finale titled “Battle of the Boats” sees boats (built on 4wd’s) crewed by Rotary Members battling each other with flour bombs and water cannons; winner is last one still mobile.

Food and Drink stalls are available on the day. Entry fees for both entrants and spectators apply.

Stonehenge Bronco Branding

Once used to refer to an untrained horse or one that habitually bucks or was prone to unpredictable behaviour, the term ‘Bronco’ now generally refers to the modern rodeo bucking horse, which is a domestic animal specifically bred for its bucking ability and raised for the rodeo.

Stonehenge in Central West Queensland is a small town whose name originated from drovers who found the area and upon deciding it to be a safe crossing of the Thomson River, built a stone 'fortress' for the men to use as a camp. The 'fortress' eventually fell to ruins and consequently the town was named. Stonehenge is located approximately 1350kms north-west of Brisbane.

‘Bronco Branding’ is Australia’s traditional and unique method of branding stock in the bush, it has been practiced on most large stations throughout Australia. Bronco branding is now a competitive sport, first performed in Alice Springs in 1984, with Stonehenge holding the first Queensland ‘Bronco Branding’ event in August 1991.

Stonehenge continues to host a ‘Bronco Branding’ event in August of each year with a horsemanship school being conducted on the Thursday and Friday prior to the event. The weekend brings visitors from near and far and has a variety of events sure to entertain everyone, including – a gymkhana, stockman’s challenge, rodeo, team penning and bronco branding.  There is live entertainment on the Saturday night, food will be available from Friday afternoon and a bar operates throughout the weekend!

Whether you are in need of a new and unique experience or you are a horse lover, come along to Stonehenge and join in the excitement at the annual Bronco Branding event.

Windorah International Yabby Races….

Cherax destructor– more commonly known as the Yabby is an Australian freshwater crustacean, usually found in dams, rivers, channels and other waterways throughout Australia.  However, in August of each year, yabbies can be found in a more unusual place – on the track at the Windorah International Yabby Races.

1200kms west of Brisbane, Windorah is one of three towns that make up the ‘Barcoo Shire’ in Central Queensland. Windorah is colloquially known as ‘The Heart of the Channel Country’ – the perfect habitat for the Yabby.

Hundreds of people passing through Windorah on their way to the Birdsville Races are captivated and entertained by the Windorah International Yabby Races held on the Wednesday night prior to the big weekend event.

Kicking the night off at 7pm is the all famous The Barcoo Bolt followed closely by the Thompson Trot, The Kyabra Kanter. The last race of the night is the grand finally – The Cooper Cup.

Each of the 10 yabbies in every event is named and auctioned off prior to the race, with the funds from the night going back into the community and a great portion of all proceeds going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The night comprises fun and entertainment for all with live music, food, and a bar operating throughout the night!

Come along and get involved in the Windorah International Yabby Races. It can’t be guaranteed that your yabby will crawl it’s way to first place, but it can be guaranteed that you’ll have a fun night that you’ll never forget!

Right from the very first race meeting back in 1882 Horse Racing in Birdsville has been well received.

After the success of the first meeting a jockey club was formed, Stewards appointed and committee elected – the rest as they say, is history.

The town was established in the 1880’s as a customs post on the SA/Qld border and at the head of the Birdsville Track Stock Route to southern markets but at Federation in 1901 tolls for cattle crossing the border were abolished and the population dwindled as a result.

The Birdsville Races however went from strength to strength.

The first course was moved to the present position after being regularly inundated with floodwaters but the cup distance has remained at 1 mile (1600 metres) since its first running in 1882, a point of difference being that the track is only one of four in Qld raced anti-clockwise.

The party starts in Thursday night with the Birdsville Races Cocktail Party – frock up and dance the night away with live music – just the thing to set the mood for the rest of the weekend….

The 13 race program with prize money in excess of $140,000.00 starts Friday and continues Saturday culminating with the XXXX Gold Birdsville Cup. Naturally, the all-important Fashions on the Field will be a highlight of the day and Oncourse Bookmakers; food and bar facilities are available throughout the event.

Racegoers will enjoy live entertainment both nights and apart from the live music be treated to one of Australia’s legendary shows with the Fred Brophy Boxing Troupe.

May be you might want to try your skills in the ring… A highlight of the weekend also occurs on Saturday night at Fred Brophy’s Boxing Tent –

The Giant Auction, where all manner of donated goods including collectables, memorabilia and vouchers – anything at all will go under the hammer to raise funds for RFDS. If you need a break from the racing, wander around the Market Stalls where you will find arts & crafts, clothes, leather goods, souvenirs and my favourite Riversands Wines wine tasting (their Black Magic Vintage Port is wicked) to name a few.

Tickets for the Birdsville Races Cocktail Party and Trackside Marquees together with Souvenir Medallion can be ordered online but must be collected along with general course entry tickets from the Birdsville Race Club shop located in the Visitor Information Centre on Billabong Boulevard during race week.

There is limited accommodation available in Birdsville during race week; camping sites are available at the Birdsville Caravan Park or overflow camping with limited facilities is available along the banks of the Diamantina River. The Birdsville Hotel is not available for accommodation during race week.

Rent-a-tent will provide tented accommodation at Tent City near the heart of the town and close to all of the action for visitors who do not want to bring bedding or erect their own tents. Packages vary but include hot showers, clean toilets and use of a basic camp kitchen facilities including power to recharge your electronic equipment. Click here for more information.

Desert Song is Central Australia’s own singer’s festival.

The annual Festival will take place during September 2018 with an exciting program where singers, choirs and audiences from Alice Springs and Central Australia and visitors to the region will experience ten days of the most captivating choral performances.

Choirs from the vibrant multi-cultural Centralian communities will come together to present a  series of events that showcase the voice: the singer and the song.

Aboriginal traditional and sacred music, ballads, classical compositions, African freedom songs, Caribbean folk music and a Cappella singing will make their appearance on the cultural smorgasbord that is Central Australia.

‘Asante Sana’ and other Alice-based choirs, small vocal ensembles and individual performers will join together in a number of events including major concerts, chamber concerts, lunch time recitals, workshops and a 'progressive' concert through iconic heritage locations in Alice Springs, a singing tour through the Ranges and much more.

“Desert Song Central' – the late night festival club, will be back with a great 'off the main stage' line up and ‘A Cappella in the Gorge’ will again be the festival's climax.

This year’s festival will feature three ‘not to be missed’ events:

A ‘singing and cultural tour’ through the ancient and beautiful West MacDonnell Ranges – culture, landscape and song – a 4-day mid-week event, conducted by one of Central Australia’s award winning adventure tour operators. 25 lucky people will be have the experience of a lifetime, a not to me missed ‘money-can’t-buy’ tour offering cultural experiences, bush tucker, bush cooking and camping out under the stars: a serene outback adventure including interaction with the people of an Aboriginal community west of Alice Springs.

The Festival will provide a facilitator to lead the party in some wonderful singing while on this tour.

The ‘icing on the cake’ will be the celebration of ten great winter seasons of rehearsals and performances by the Festival’s main act – the community choir Asante Sana – during the Festival’s final weekend, with the customary festival-ending concert ‘A Cappella in the Gorge’ this year to be held at Central Australia’s premier bush getaway, the Ross River Resort in the in the majestic East MacDonnell Ranges.

This wonderful but largely unknown story of choral practice and musical heritage will be unveiled through a Festival-opening Symposium, followed by a ground-breaking performance at the Araluen Performing Arts Centre by Indigenous women’s choirs from Alice Springs, and from the remote communities of Hermannsburg, Areyonga, Titjikala, Mutitjulu and Docker River.

NATIONAL BILBY DAY – 2nd Sunday in September

These delightful furry Australians now have a special day of their own, NATIONAL BILBY DAY was officially launched in 2005 and the celebrations are held on the second Sunday of September annually. The National Bilby Day Celebration will be held in Charleville, South West Queensland and will capture the real bush and conservation flavour.

With a very exiting and interesting program for all young and young at heart to enjoy.

Save the Bilby Fund is running a competition for kids for National Bilby Day. The competition can be accessed via www.savethebilbyfund.org and by then clicking on the competition link.Schools can win live bilby visits and the kids can use this research activity to learn lots more about endangered species.

What can you do to help?

We invite you, your school, family and friends and local businesses to contribute $20 towards a panel of fence. Each donor will be officially recognised on-site at Currawinya National Park on a “Roll of Honour” permanently on display at the site and issued a personal certificate.

Donations will also be graciously received from larger corporate organisations wishing to make a larger financial commitment.

We also have a large range of Bilby merchandise that can be order by downloading the order form off our website www.savethebilbyfund.com and sent to the address supplied. The increasingly high profile of bilbies means more dollars for the fund. To date, The Save the Bilby Fund has raised over $800,000. Primarily donated by everyday Australians.

We need your support.

Now that we have become an incorporated entity, any costs that we can recover to put back into our wonderful bilbies will be critical to their survival and to the success of the fund. We want to keep you informed of what we are doing and how you can help participate in fantastic events such as the National Bilby Day.

This would not have been possible without all your support and I am convinced that the next generation will be most grateful.

Australian Camp oven Festival is on again October 2018

Millmerran, one hour south west of Toowoomba, swells five-fold for their biennial Australian Camp Oven Festival, the largest of its kind in Australia and an event not to be missed.

The Australian Camp Oven Festival gives this quintessential piece of Australian Heritage new life to a new generation of Australians.

Thousands of caravans, motor homes, tents and trailers converge on the township of Millmerran to join this exciting outback event; and with the hot showers and clean amenities at the showgrounds, camping is suitable for everyone.

Throughout this laidback weekend visitors are spoilt for choice in entertainment with Poet Breakfasts each morning – enjoy your breakfast whilst listing to tales of the outback, damper throwing competitions, view the horse shoeing, sheep shearing demonstrations, billy boiling competitions or just sit back and enjoy the Country Music during the day and evening.

Perhaps you might wish to wander amongst the dozens of stalls that sell an array of goods including food, (the campoven dinners are always popular) wine, clothes, leatherware,bric-a-brac, and assorted impliments, watch the popular Tractor Pull or place a bid on one of the Minature Racing Pigs.

Australian Living History is displayed with camp oven cooking competitions where contestants make meals over the weekend and are judged on them, the sound of old machinery chugging away in the nearby paddock and blacksmiths plying their trade.

Legendary lineup for Winton’s famous Outback Festival  September 2019

It’s back! Queensland’s heritage township of Winton is pulling out all stops to host an extra special Outback Festival in September 2019.

Winton’s Outback Festival, one of Australia’s Most Quirkiest Festivals

It’s been coined quirky, strange and even weird by some, but the locals just call it, the “Outback Festival”.

It has been luring visitors from all over Australia and overseas since 1972 with its unique blend of outback themed events and authentic Aussie experiences, and in 2017 is planned to literally deliver a giant.

The Outback Festival is staged in the tiny town of Winton, North West of Longreach in the heart of Outback Queensland.  Home to just over 900 residents, its population swells to over 8,000 during the festival which is being held in September 2019.

Famous for its hilarious signature event, the Quilton Australian Dunny Derby, this hilarious event involves teams of five pulling and pushing the thunderbox (dunny) through a 200 metre course, all competing for a AUD 5,000 prize pool.

“Our theme for the 2019 festival is Giants of the Outback”, explains Event Director, Robyn Stephens OAM. “We’re highlighting our home grown giants, whether they’re giant in size or giant in spirit.

It could be anything from the big red kangaroo, our prehistoric dinosaurs to our giant courageous outback spirt, that gave birth to Qantas and Waltzing Matilda”.

“To deliver on this year’s theme, we’ll be bringing textile artisan, Wanda Bennet of Cross Roads Arts to Winton to work with the community to create Giant Puppetry that will feature throughout the festival”, said Robyn.

“It’s all part of an incredible line up of concerts and performers that participate in the festival.  With the official entertainment announcement due in the coming months, I can reveal one of Australia’s most revered didgeridoo players, William Barton will be performing live with the MSB Didge Kids from the Atherton Tablelands in Tropical North Queensland”.

Other Outback Festival highlights include an Outback Ironman, Ironwoman and Iron Junior competitions and the gruelling, toughest and flattest cycle in the Outback, the 100 Kilometres or 100 miles (your choice) – the Outback Century Cycle Challenge.

The entertainment line up includes one of Australia’s favourites, Mental as Anything, the RAR Rock Band and Australian didgeridoo master, William Barton, Warren H Williams,
Pixie Jenkins and the MSB Didge Kids – Opening Concert.

There’s also a swag of novelty Australiana events, such as whip cracking championships, bushman’s egg throwing, strongman challenges, wool bale rolling, and the True Blue Sports, a test of classic Aussie sporting skills like kicking a footie, darts, bowls, marbles and cow pat discus.

Combine this with live bands, little swaggies, kid’s events and a sunset dining experience overlooking Winton’s stunning landscape, this is an Aussie festival not to be missed in 2017.

Winton really does welcome its visitors, and to cater for the township’s residential swell, a special festival camping ground for caravans, RVs and campers is set up in the showgrounds.

For those looking for a little more comfort, a tent city, called “Club Paterson”, is available at one of the local schools, where tents and beds with linen packages are available.

The five-day Outback Festival is held during the Queensland school holidays in Spring, the best time of the year to enjoy the Australian Outback, when the days and nights are mild.

Look forward to seeing you in Winton mate!

GETTING TO WINTON

Winton is located 1,300km from Queensland’s capital Brisbane and has a population of around 900 people.

It’s sealed roads all the way, via the Matilda highway, less than 2 hours n/w of Longreach.

Daily Qantaslink flights from Brisbane to Longreach Airport with coach transfers to Winton.  Or fly from Townsville to Winton Airport with REX Airlines.

Daily Bus Queensland services are available to Winton from Brisbane throughout Outback Queensland.

WINTON’S CLAIM TO FAME

Winton is the birthplace of Qantas and home to Australia’s largest collection of dinosaur fossils at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, just 24km from “downtown” Winton. Also near Winton is Lark Quarry Conservation Park, a 93 million year old fossilized dinosaur stampede, the only one of its kind in the world.

It’s here Australia’s unofficial national anthem, Waltzing Matilda, written by AB (Banjo) Paterson, was first performed in public at the North Gregory Hotel in Winton’s main street.
