Experience Australia's living heritage with Shear Outback in Hay, NSW. 

This captivating tourist attraction celebrates the culture and colourful character of Australian shearing life past and present.

The “shearer” is an icon of the Australian outback, and here you can explore the evolution of shearing in the bush.  From the early days of the pioneering sprit to today's multi billion dollar Wool industry, you can experience shearing first hand with this interactive and multi-faceted facility.

Shear Outback is an award-winning tourist and educational attraction comprising several complementary experiences.

They include; The Australian Shearers’ Hall of Fame; the Shear Outback Exhibition; the historic Murray Downs Woolshed; a Special Exhibition Gallery; a Retail Shop; a Café; – and an ever-evolving year-round calendar of events and programs. Visitors meet the shearers, shedhands, sheep and dogs who work in the shearing and wool industries.

The experience is interactive, educational, entertaining, – and fun.

Visitors can also experience first hand the stamina and training needed to shear a sheep, take on Jackie Howe’s legendary blade-shears record, see inside a working handpiece, take part in live shearing demonstrations several times daily, and more.

  • Shearing demonstrations take place at 10.30am, 1pm & 3.30pm daily

During January and February each year shearing demonstrations will occur from Wed – Sun only.

  • Daytime visits- Museum & Interpretive Centre

We welcome visitors and groups of all ages and interests.
Relax in the on-site coffee shop.  A large range of snacks are available throughout the day. The café is open from 10-4pm daily. (Note: our cafe will be closed in the 1st two weeks of February)

Opening Hours – Daytime Visits- Shear Outback Museum & Interpretive Centre:

To gain an overview of the Shear Outback, please allow a few hours. For full appreciation, allow a full day.

9am – 5pm daily every day except Christmas Day. Operating hours on Good Friday are subject to demand.
