About the Centre:
Experience Australia's living heritage with the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton, Outback Queensland. This captivating tourist attraction celebrates Australia's National song “Waltzing Matilda”.
Waltzing Matilda is an icon of Australia, and here you can experience Banjo's Paterson's inspiration in creating the song. The Centre features interactive displays, a unique audio visual presentation of the story behind Waltzing Matilda.
The Waltzing Matilda Centre includes the Outback Regional Gallery, Qantilda Pioneer Place Museum, the Station Store, Coolibah Café, Winton Visitor Information Centre and Westpac In-store.
Qantilda Pioneer Place Museum was built as a tribute to Qantas and the pioneers of the area by the Winton & District Historical Society, and is incorporated into the Waltzing Matilda Centre. The museum contains a unique collection of artefacts and outback memorabilia.
Waltzing Matilda Facilities:
The Billabong Theatrette – the introduction to the Centre. Pull up a stump, mist rises from the surface of the water and a ghostly apparition appears – the swaggie telling his own version of Australia’s greatest legend, and its impact on Australian history.
Home of the Legends Exhibition room – an exciting exhibition gallery packed with interactive and static displays including a Hologram. Learn the truth, myth and legend behind Australia’s National song while exploring the characters behind Waltzing Matilda and the swaggie way of life thousands of men were forced to adopt.
Qantilda Museum – dedicated to the history of the Winton district and it honours some of our country’s great pioneers and icons. eight buildings present a fascinating collection of memorabilia, ensuring the museum’s rating as one of the most extensive Australiana type museums in regional Australia, including steam locomotive, military display, Qantas display, old farm vehicles and equipment, household items and furnishings, ceramics, photographs, clothing and much more.
The Outback Regional Gallery and Gallery Foyer– presenting local and nationally-acclaimed artists. The Art Gallery presents a constantly changing program of exhibitions for your enjoyment; these include annual national competitions for paintings, three dimensional works, photography and traveling exhibitions form State and National Galleries. The Gallery Foyer is an intimate exhibition space used to showcase regional artists.
Coolibah Café – award winning cafe opened daily, is a great place to relax over a tea or coffee and your choice of home made delights. All meals are prepared using the freshest of ingredients.
The Station Store – browse through an ever changing array of souvenirs and gifts. Choose from our wide rang, including books, clothing, body products, CDs, Outback handcrafts, along with a large variety of children’s novelties. .
Winton Visitor Information Centre – Visit our accredited Visitor Information Centre; let our friendly staff introduce you to our wonderful town and our unique and diverse landscape. Pick up one of our self drive brochures and experience the best of Winton and our surrounding districts.
Open daily from 9.00am to 5pm (closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day)

- Public Holidays: Reduced Hours (Usually 9am to 2pm).
