The original Outback Now article "Discover the secrets of amazing Longreach" and its listing for the Qantas Founders Museum were among the site's most-linked pages. This guide focuses on the heritage attractions; for practical information see the Longreach town guide.
Qantas Founders Museum
Qantas was founded in western Queensland in 1920 and moved its base to Longreach in 1921. The museum centres on the original heritage-listed hangar, where early aircraft were assembled, and displays retired airliners — including a Boeing 747 and a Boeing 707 — with guided tours inside and, for an extra fee, a walk on the 747's wing. Exhibits trace the airline's role in connecting the outback.
Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame
Opened in 1988, the Hall of Fame is a tribute to the people of the outback. Galleries cover Aboriginal custodianship, exploration, pastoral life, droving, stockwomen and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. In the cooler months, live stockman shows feature horses, dogs and bush yarns.
Other experiences
Sunset cruises on the Thomson River with dinner and entertainment, Cobb & Co stagecoach rides, station experiences and the Longreach School of Distance Education are all worth adding.
Planning
Most attractions operate full schedules from April to October. Book cruises and tours ahead in school holidays. Pair Longreach with Winton and Barcaldine.

Longreach and the outback story
Longreach sits on the Thomson River in central-west Queensland, on the traditional lands of the Iningai people. The town grew in the late nineteenth century as a service centre for vast sheep and cattle stations, and the arrival of the railway made it a hub for the region. Its role in the founding of Qantas and its selection as the site of the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame have made it one of outback Queensland's main heritage destinations. Many visitors spend two or three days here, combining museums with river cruises and nearby towns.
Inside the Stockman's Hall of Fame
The Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame was conceived in the 1970s as a national memorial to the pioneers of the outback, and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988. Its galleries tell the story of the inland through themes rather than a single timeline. Highlights include:
- Aboriginal heritage — the long history of Aboriginal custodianship of the inland and the contribution of Aboriginal stockmen and women.
- Explorers and pioneers — the expeditions that crossed the interior and the families who settled pastoral country.
- Life on the land — station homesteads, shearing, droving and the tools and saddlery of stock work.
- Outback services — the Royal Flying Doctor Service, School of the Air, the mail run and the bush nursing tradition.
Allow at least half a day. The live outback stockman shows run in the cooler months; check the schedule for days and times. For deeper background on droving, see Droving and the stock routes.
Qantas Founders Museum in detail
The Qantas Founders Museum has its own guide: see Qantas Founders Museum. In short, combine the museum galleries with an aircraft tour and allow time to see the heritage hangar.
The Thomson River
The Thomson River is one of the rivers of the Lake Eyre Basin, which flows south-west towards the Channel Country in wet years. At Longreach, the river forms long waterholes lined with coolibahs. Sunset cruises have long been a Longreach tradition, often paired with a dinner, campfire and entertainment on the riverbank. The river is also good for birdwatching and fishing; check Queensland fishing rules for size and bag limits.
Day trips from Longreach
- Ilfracombe — about 27 km east, with a "machinery mile" of historic vehicles and equipment and the Wellshot Hotel.
- Barcaldine — about 108 km east, home of the Tree of Knowledge memorial and the Australian Workers Heritage Centre, which tells the story of the shearers' strikes and the labour movement. See Barcaldine.
- Winton — about 180 km north-west, home of the Waltzing Matilda Centre and the dinosaur trail. See Winton and the Dinosaur Trail.
- Isisford — south of Longreach, with the Outer Barcoo Interpretation Centre and fossil displays.
Station stays and farm experiences
Several stations in the region welcome visitors for farm stays, camping or tours, and some offer seasonal experiences such as mustering demonstrations. Ask the Longreach visitor information centre for current options, as properties change over time.
Getting there and around
Longreach Airport has flights from Brisbane, and Queensland Rail's Spirit of the Outback travels between Brisbane and Longreach. By road, Longreach is on the Landsborough Highway (part of the Matilda Way) and the Capricorn Highway. Hire cars are available but should be booked ahead in the cooler months. The town is compact, but the airport attractions and the Hall of Fame are on opposite sides of town, so you'll need transport.
When to visit
The cooler months from about April to September offer the most comfortable weather and the fullest tour schedules. Summer temperatures are high, and some tours run reduced schedules. Check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast before travelling, especially in the wet season when roads can close after heavy rain.
