Longreach sits on the Thomson River in central-west Queensland, on Iningai Country, close to the Tropic of Capricorn. It grew as a service centre for the region's sheep and cattle stations and became a railhead in 1892. Two big museums make it the most-visited town in outback Queensland.
Things to do
Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame. Opened in 1988, the Hall of Fame tells the story of the outback's pioneers, drovers, stockmen and women, and Aboriginal stockworkers through extensive galleries. Live shows run in the cooler months. Allow half a day.
Qantas Founders Museum. Qantas — the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services — was founded in Winton in November 1920, registered as a company in Brisbane, and held its first board meeting in Winton in early 1921 before moving its operations to Longreach later that year. The original heritage-listed hangar stands alongside a museum with retired aircraft including a Boeing 747 and 707 that you can tour; wing walks are a popular extra.
Thomson River sunset cruise. Cruises on the river, often combined with dinner and entertainment around a campfire, are a Longreach institution in the cooler months.
Stagecoach and station experiences. Several operators offer Cobb & Co stagecoach rides, station tours and outback dinners. Check current operators with the visitor centre.
Longreach School of Distance Education. Tours explain how children on remote stations are educated; check availability.
Nearby
Winton, 180 km north-west, is the hub of the dinosaur trail. Ilfracombe, 27 km east, has an outdoor machinery mile, and Barcaldine, about 105 km east, is home to the Tree of Knowledge.
History and Country
Longreach takes its name from the "long reach" of the Thomson River, a long permanent waterhole beside the town. The Iningai people are the Traditional Owners of the area. The surrounding Mitchell grass downs — vast, treeless plains of nutritious native grass — attracted pastoralists from the 1860s, and Longreach was surveyed in the late 1880s. The arrival of the Central Western railway in 1892 made it the commercial centre of the district.
Wool made the region prosperous. Big sheep stations, shearing sheds and woolscours defined life in the central west for much of the twentieth century, alongside cattle. The great shearers' strikes of 1891 and 1894 played out across this country, with Barcaldine, just to the east, at their centre.
Longreach's other defining story is aviation. Qantas — the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services — was founded in Winton in November 1920 and registered as a company in Brisbane; after its first board meeting in Winton in early 1921, it moved its headquarters to Longreach that year, where it built aircraft in its hangar during the 1920s. It moved its headquarters to Brisbane in 1930. That history underpins the Qantas Founders Museum. In 1988, the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame opened on the edge of town as a national tribute to the people of the outback.
A suggested three-day itinerary
Day 1 — Stockman's Hall of Fame and the river. Spend the morning at the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame. Galleries move from Aboriginal custodianship of the land through exploration, pastoral settlement, droving, the role of women on stations, and the outback services. If a live show is scheduled, it is worth timing your visit around it. In the late afternoon, join a Thomson River sunset cruise — many include a campfire dinner and bush entertainment.
Day 2 — Qantas Founders Museum. Allow most of the day. Explore the original hangar, the museum exhibits on early aviation and the airline's role in connecting remote Queensland, and the retired aircraft on display. Guided tours take you inside the jets, and a wing walk on the Boeing 747 is a popular extra. Read our Qantas Founders Museum guide for more.
Day 3 — Around the district. Drive 27 km east to Ilfracombe to see its outdoor machinery mile and historic buildings, then on to Barcaldine for the Tree of Knowledge and the Australian Workers Heritage Centre. Alternatively, take a station experience or stagecoach tour, or head north-west to Winton to start the dinosaur trail.
Seasons and when to go
Longreach has a hot semi-arid climate. Bureau of Meteorology records show summer maximums are regularly very hot, while winter days are mild and sunny with cold nights — occasionally near freezing. Most tour operators run full schedules from about April to October; some experiences pause or reduce over summer. Winter school holidays (late June to July) are the busiest time, and caravan parks fill up, so book ahead.
Getting there
- By road: from Brisbane, about 1,170 km via the Warrego and Landsborough highways, or via Rockhampton and the Capricorn Highway (about 690 km from Rockhampton). All sealed.
- By rail: Queensland Rail's Spirit of the Outback runs from Brisbane via Rockhampton to Longreach, typically twice a week; check the current timetable.
- By air: Longreach Airport has regular flights to Brisbane.
Where to stay
Longreach has motels, hotels, cabins, and several caravan parks, some with nightly entertainment in season, plus station stays in the district. The town is a common two- or three-night stop for caravanners on the Matilda Way. Book well ahead for the winter school holidays and for major events.
Food and supplies
There are supermarkets, bakeries, pubs and cafés in town, and fuel stations open long hours. It is a good place to restock before heading further west, where choices thin out quickly.
Travel safety
The Landsborough and Capricorn highways are sealed but long and straight. Fatigue and wildlife are the main hazards. Plan to arrive before dusk, and watch for road trains and cattle on unfenced stretches. In summer, carry extra water even on short drives.
Thomson River
The Thomson River, a few kilometres north-west of town, is one of the main streams of Channel Country, flowing south to join Cooper Creek. Its waterholes, lined with coolabah trees, are popular for camping, fishing and sunset cruises. A free camping area on the river has been available near town; check current rules locally. After big rains, the river spreads across a wide floodplain.
Events
Longreach hosts race meetings, rodeos and the Longreach Show, as well as outback festivals. Dates change each year; check the Longreach Regional Council website or the visitor centre.
Travel with kids
Longreach is ideal for families: the Stockman's Hall of Fame, the Qantas Founders Museum's aircraft, a river cruise and the School of Distance Education tours all appeal to children.
How long do you need at the Stockman's Hall of Fame?
The Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame suggests allowing about 4 hours for the full experience: the museum and galleries, the live Outback Stockman's Show, and the cinema. A visit to just the museum and galleries takes about 1.5 hours. The live show is scheduled for 11:30 am, and bookings are essential. Check the current schedule, because shows are seasonal.
The Qantas Founders Museum
The museum's guided tour takes about 90 minutes. It includes the hangar, the Airpark of historic aircraft and a light show. Extra experiences, such as the Boeing 747 wing walk, are booked separately. The museum's own 24-hour itinerary is a good template for a short stay.

Two to three days. Spend a day at the Stockman's Hall of Fame, a day at the Qantas Founders Museum, and an evening Thomson River sunset cruise, with time for a station or heritage experience. Add a day trip to Winton (about 180 km) or Barcaldine.
