The Mount Isa Rodeo is north-west Queensland's biggest annual event. Old Outback Now listings for the rodeo were well linked, and this guide replaces them. For the city itself, see our Mount Isa town guide.

A short history

The rodeo dates back to 1959, when it was started by the local Rotary Club as a community fundraiser. It grew rapidly, attracting competitors from cattle stations across the north and, later, professional riders from around Australia and overseas. Over the decades it became a destination event, and it is now run by a not-for-profit organisation with sponsorship from Mount Isa Mines. Funds raised have supported local charities and community groups.

What happens

  • Rodeo events: bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback riding, steer wrestling, rope and tie, team roping and barrel racing, with professional and novice sections.
  • Indigenous Rodeo Championships: recent programs have included the Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships, held on the final day before the open finals.
  • Venue: the rodeo is held at Buchanan Park, on the corner of George and Sutton streets, with competition in the Kalkadoon Arena.
  • Entertainment: live music, a carnival, markets, food stalls and fireworks have featured in recent programs.
  • Other events: associated events such as a rodeo ball and fundraising activities run in the lead-up.

The program changes each year; check the official website.

Planning your trip

  • Book early: accommodation in Mount Isa is in high demand. Consider staying in Cloncurry and driving in.
  • Tickets: buy tickets online through the official website. We do not list prices.
  • Weather: August is in the dry season — warm, sunny days and cool nights. Bring a hat, sunscreen and a jacket.
  • Getting around: the rodeo grounds are close to the city centre. Taxis and shuttle services are busy; plan ahead.

Getting there

Mount Isa Airport has daily flights from Brisbane and Townsville. The Inlander train runs from Townsville, and the Barkly and Flinders highways connect Mount Isa with the NT and the coast. Road trains are common; avoid driving at night because of wildlife and cattle.

Other outback rodeos

Rodeos and campdrafts are held across the outback through the cooler months. See our festivals, rodeos and race days guide and the Birdsville Races.

2027 dates

The organisers list the 2027 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo for Friday 6 to Sunday 8 August 2027 at Buchanan Park, with the Indigenous Rodeo Championships and Open Finals on the Sunday. Check the official Mount Isa Rodeo website for tickets and program updates.

Rodeo events explained

If you're new to rodeo, these are the events you'll see:

  • Bull riding — the crowd favourite. Riders hold a rope wrapped around a bull and must stay on for eight seconds, with one hand free. Scores reflect both rider and bull.
  • Saddle bronc riding — riders use a special saddle and a rein attached to the horse's halter, with points awarded for style and rhythm.
  • Bareback riding — riders hold a rigging strapped to the horse, without a saddle or rein.
  • Steer wrestling — a rider leaps from a galloping horse onto a steer and wrestles it to the ground.
  • Rope and tie, team roping and breakaway roping — timed events testing horse and rider skills.
  • Barrel racing — horse and rider race in a pattern around barrels, with penalties for knocking them over.

Professional events are run under the rules of Australian rodeo associations, which set standards for competitor safety and animal welfare. If you have concerns about animal welfare, raise them with the organisers or the relevant association.

Mount Isa and its history

Mount Isa sits on the Leichhardt River on the Country of the Kalkadoon people, whose resistance to colonisation in the 1880s is remembered in the city. The Kalkadoon Arena at the rodeo grounds honours them. The city was founded after prospector John Campbell Miles found ore in 1923, and Mount Isa Mines grew into one of the world's major producers of silver, lead, zinc and copper. The mine stacks dominate the skyline. Mining is still the main employer, and the company's sponsorship has long supported the rodeo.

Things to do around rodeo week

  • Outback at Isa — the visitor centre complex with the Riversleigh Fossil Centre, displaying fossils from the World Heritage-listed Riversleigh site, and the Hard Times Mine underground tour experience. Check what is currently operating.
  • City Lookout — views over the city and the mine, especially at sunset.
  • Lake Moondarra — a reservoir north of the city, popular for picnics, fishing and birdwatching.
  • Kalkadoon Tribal Council Keeping Place — learn about the Kalkadoon people.
  • Day trips — Cloncurry and its John Flynn Place, or Camooweal and its caves. See Cloncurry and Camooweal.
  • Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) — a longer trip north to the gorge. See Boodjamulla.

Budgeting time

Plan at least three days for the rodeo itself, plus travel. If you're driving, Mount Isa is a long way from anywhere: roughly 900 km from Townsville and around 650 km from Tennant Creek, so allow plenty of time and avoid driving at night. Many visitors combine the rodeo with the Boulia camel races or a trip along the Savannah Way.

Safety and comfort

Rodeo arenas can be dusty; people with asthma or allergies should bring their medication. Keep children close in the busy grounds, follow directions from event staff and drink plenty of water in the sun. Nights in August can be cool, so pack layers.
