Millmerran sits on the Gore Highway about 82 km west of Toowoomba. Surrounded by grain, cotton and cattle country, it is a quiet rural town that comes alive every second October for the Australian Camp Oven Festival.

History and Country

Millmerran lies on the Country of the Traditional Owners of the western Darling Downs. Pastoralists took up runs in the area in the 1840s, following Allan Cunningham's exploration of the Darling Downs in 1827. Closer settlement in the early twentieth century broke up large stations into smaller farms, and the railway arrived in 1911, helping Millmerran grow as a centre for dairying, grain and later cotton.

Things to do

Australian Camp Oven Festival. The town's signature event celebrates bush cooking, bush poetry and heritage. See our festival guide.

Millmerran murals. Murals around town depict local history, from pioneering days to the farming industry. Ask at the visitor information outlet for a map.

Millmerran Museum. The museum displays local history, farm machinery and household items from the town's past.

Anzac memorial. The town's war memorial honours local men and women who served.

Nearby nature. State forests and reserves around the Condamine River offer birdwatching and picnic spots. Bring binoculars.

A short itinerary

Morning: Drive from Toowoomba, visit the murals and the museum.

Afternoon: Explore the surrounding farmland, then continue west to Goondiwindi or south to Inglewood and the Granite Belt.

Seasons

Spring and autumn are most pleasant. Winters are cool with frosty mornings, while summers can be hot with storms.

A motel, hotels and a caravan park, plus cafés, a bakery and a supermarket. During the Camp Oven Festival, camping is available at the showgrounds.

Travel safety

The Gore Highway carries heavy trucks. Watch for kangaroos at dawn and dusk.

Who it suits

Millmerran suits festival-goers, food lovers interested in camp oven cooking, and travellers exploring the Darling Downs.

Day trips from Millmerran

Cecil Plains. North of Millmerran, Cecil Plains is a cotton and grain town on the Condamine River, with a historic homestead area and riverside picnic spots. Cotton harvest and ginning take place in autumn, and the district is a good place to see large-scale irrigated farming.

Leyburn. To the east, the small town of Leyburn is remembered in motor-racing history: the 1949 Australian Grand Prix was held on a former wartime airfield nearby. A historic motor sprint event has been held in the town in some years; check local listings for dates.

Pittsworth. On the road to Toowoomba, Pittsworth has a pioneer village museum and is surrounded by some of the Darling Downs' richest farmland.

Inglewood and Coolmunda Dam. To the south-west, Inglewood is an olive and tobacco-heritage town near Coolmunda Dam, popular for fishing and camping.

Stargazing and big skies

Away from the lights of Toowoomba and Brisbane, the countryside around Millmerran offers good stargazing on clear winter nights. Pull well off the road at a rest area or stay at the caravan park and let your eyes adjust for 20 minutes or so.

Events beyond the festival

Like many rural towns, Millmerran has a local show, sporting carnivals and community markets through the year. The Toowoomba Regional Council website and the local visitor information outlet list upcoming events; dates change each year.

Accessibility and services

Millmerran has the basic services most travellers need, including fuel, a supermarket, a pharmacy and a medical centre. For specialist services and larger shops, Toowoomba is the nearest city. Mobile coverage is generally good in town but may drop out in surrounding farmland and state forests.

Driving tips for the Downs

Roads around Millmerran pass through working farmland. Expect slow-moving farm machinery during planting and harvest, grain trucks on the highways and occasional livestock on minor roads. Fog can form in low-lying areas on winter mornings; slow down and use your headlights. See kangaroos and driving safety.

  • Goondiwindi — south-west, on the Macintyre River.
  • Inglewood and the Granite Belt — south.

Farming on the Downs

The Darling Downs is one of Australia's most productive agricultural regions, thanks to its deep black soils. Around Millmerran, farmers grow wheat, barley, sorghum and cotton, and raise beef cattle. Feedlots and grain storage facilities dot the countryside. Harvest seasons bring a flurry of activity, with headers working long hours and trucks on the roads.

Energy

Millmerran Power Station, a coal-fired power station south of town, began operating in the early 2000s, and the district has since attracted solar and other energy projects. The industry is a significant local employer.

Camp oven cooking at home

If the festival inspires you, start with a classic damper: flour, salt, water or milk, and a little butter, baked in a camp oven over coals. Keep the coals even, put some on the lid, and check after about 20–30 minutes. Always observe fire restrictions.

What Millmerran is famous for

Visit Toowoomba Region describes Millmerran as a town that works hard to preserve its pioneering history. It's best known for the Australian Camp Oven Festival, held on the first weekend of October every two years. The festival celebrates bush cooking, with camp oven, damper and billy competitions, heritage displays and entertainment. Check the festival website for confirmed dates before planning around it.

Around town, look for:

  • The Millmerran Museum, with historic buildings and displays on district life.
  • Heritage murals on buildings around town.
  • The historic walk through the town centre.
  • The Yandilla churches, nearby, from the early Darling Downs settlement period.

The surrounding district is known for grazing, cropping and cypress pine forests.

Not strictly. Millmerran is on the western Darling Downs, about an hour south-west of Toowoomba. It's more farm country than outback. Many travellers pass through on the way west to St George and the south-west, and the camp oven festival celebrates outback bush cooking traditions.
