The original Outback Now published several "to Darwin" itineraries — Sydney via Narrabri and Roma, Sydney via Nyngan and Charleville, Melbourne via Bourke and Charleville, Brisbane to Darwin and Townsville to Darwin. They share most of their outback mileage, so we have combined them into one guide.

Option A: via Bourke and Charleville (the Matilda Way)

Sydney – Dubbo – Nyngan – Bourke – Cunnamulla – Charleville – Augathella – Tambo – Blackall – Barcaldine – Longreach – Winton – Cloncurry – Mount Isa – Camooweal – Three Ways – Katherine – Darwin.

Melbourne travellers can join this route at Bourke via the Newell or Kidman Way.

Option B: via Narrabri and Roma

Sydney – Newcastle or the Golden Highway – Narrabri – Moree – Goondiwindi – St George or Moonie – Roma – Mitchell – Charleville – then as Option A. Brisbane travellers join at Roma via the Warrego Highway.

Townsville variation

From Townsville, follow the Flinders Highway through Charters Towers, Hughenden and Richmond to Cloncurry — the dinosaur trail.

The Barkly and Stuart

From Mount Isa, the Barkly Highway crosses the Barkly Tableland to Three Ways, where the Stuart Highway leads north to Katherine and Darwin. Fuel stops are far apart: Camooweal, Barkly Homestead and Three Ways/Tennant Creek.

Tips

All routes are sealed. Avoid the Top End in the wet season. Budget extra days for side trips — Lark Quarry, Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) and Mataranka.

Choosing your route

All three variations meet in north-west Queensland and finish on the Stuart Highway, but each has a different character. Option A, the Matilda Way, follows the "Waltzing Matilda" country through Bourke, Charleville, Longreach and Winton, with a strong focus on outback heritage. Option B passes through the cotton and grain country of north-west NSW and the Maranoa, and links easily with the Great Artesian Spa Tour. The Townsville variation suits those who want to see the coast first or combine the trip with the Dinosaur Trail. Whichever you choose, the full distance from Sydney to Darwin is roughly 4,000 km.

Highlights of the Matilda Way

The Matilda Way is a touring route promoted by Queensland tourism bodies along the Mitchell, Landsborough and Barkly highways:

  • Bourke — the Back O' Bourke Exhibition Centre and the Darling River.
  • Cunnamulla — the Artesian Fountain and the Cunnamulla Fella statue.
  • Charleville — the Bilby Experience, the Cosmos Centre and the RFDS visitor centre.
  • Tambo — known for the Tambo Teddies, made from local wool.
  • Blackall — the historic Blackall Woolscour, Jackie Howe's shearing record history and the Black Stump.
  • Barcaldine — the Tree of Knowledge memorial and the Australian Workers Heritage Centre.
  • Longreach — the Qantas Founders Museum and Stockman's Hall of Fame. See our Longreach heritage guide.
  • Winton — the Waltzing Matilda Centre, Age of Dinosaurs and Lark Quarry.
  • Kynuna and McKinlay — Combo Waterhole, associated with "Waltzing Matilda", and the Walkabout Creek Hotel from Crocodile Dundee.
  • Cloncurry — John Flynn Place and the birthplace of the RFDS.
  • Mount Isa — mining city and home of the Mount Isa Rodeo.
  • Camooweal — the Drovers Camp and the Camooweal Caves.

The Northern Territory stretch

From Camooweal, the Barkly Highway crosses into the NT and runs across the treeless Barkly Tableland to Barkly Homestead and Three Ways. Clocks move back half an hour when you cross into the NT, which does not observe daylight saving. Head north on the Stuart Highway through Elliott, Daly Waters, Mataranka and Katherine to Darwin. See the Adelaide to Darwin guide for stops along this section.

How long to allow

Two weeks is a practical minimum for driving at a steady pace with a few rest days. Three to four weeks lets you explore side trips such as Lark Quarry, Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill), the Camooweal Caves, Nitmiluk and Litchfield.

Planning tips

  • Fuel: available in each town, but long gaps exist on the Barkly; carry a reserve.
  • Accommodation: motels, hotels and caravan parks in the main towns, plus free camps and rest areas. Book ahead around major events such as the Mount Isa Rodeo in August.
  • Heat and rain: travel between April and October. Summer in the north brings heat, storms and flooding.
  • Road trains: common on all routes. Give them room.

For practical preparation, read fuel, permits and road conditions.

Side trips worth the detour

  • Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways — about 110 km south-west of Winton by a partly unsealed road, with guided tours of a dinosaur footprint site.
  • Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park — a long detour north of Mount Isa or Camooweal to emerald-green gorges, canoeing and walking tracks. Roads are partly unsealed and can close in the wet. See Boodjamulla.
  • Camooweal Caves National Park — sinkholes and caves south of Camooweal; the caves themselves are only for experienced, equipped cavers, but the park's walks and campground are accessible.
  • Nitmiluk and Litchfield — gorges, waterfalls and swimming holes near Katherine and Darwin. See Nitmiluk.

Road conditions

All the main highways on these routes are sealed, but heavy rain can still close sections through flooding, especially in Queensland's Channel Country and the Gulf. Check QLDTraffic, Live Traffic NSW and the NT Road Report before each day's drive.
